A little more about Nicole

  • 1980-1984 – A voracious reader of picture books from birth, I started writing and illustrating my own books. Most notable for depicting cows with udders, women with cleavage, and frogs in underwear (detail-oriented from the start!)

  • 1988 - Started writing poetry.

  • 1991 – Fell deeply in love with poetry and became enthralled with the freedom on the page.

  • 1992 – Dakota County Library Poetry winner.

  • 1994 – Wrote for the 8th grade paper in junior high and fell in love with journalism. Inform, entertain, and educate became my motto.

  • 1995 – Dakota County Library Short Story winner.

  • 1997 – Staff writer for Paw Prints. Also received an honorary mention for the Young Adult Poetry Contest at the Dakota County Library.

  • 1998 – Became the Arts &Entertainment editor for Paw Prints. 

  • 1999 – Wrote for the Dakota Student at the University of North Dakota and was being groomed to take over for the Arts & Entertainment Editor (transferred to St. Cloud).

  • 2003 – My last two years of college were muddled with my personal life, but nevertheless, I persisted, and graduated from the St. Cloud State University with a degree in Creative Writing and Mass Communications – Journalism.

    • May – August – Read Harry Potter books, applied for jobs, and ate too many Mr. Freezes.

    • Capitulated and took a job in child care (I had to pay the bills.)

  • 2004 – Crossroads. Quit child care job due to moral and ethical values (with no job lined up!) Within two weeks had two offers.

    • Made lemonade with lemons. Accepted receptionist position with real estate company knowing they were hoping to publish a quarterly newsletter.

    • Promoted within 3 months and researched, wrote, produced their quarterly newsletter along with other marketing responsibilities.

  • 2006 – Market crashing! Jumped ship and grabbed preserver at law firm.

    • Learned how to write client communications, correspondence to opposing counsel, draft initial legal documents, and communicate with the courts.

  • 2007 – Started teaching yoga at the YMCA. Nothing to do with writing, but who doesn’t want a yoga instructor in their life? 

  • 2008 – accepted a position with a title insurance underwriter.

    • Write copy for agency collateral, content for webpages, newsletters, etc.

  • 2010 – Very Short Play Festival winner.

  • 2011 - Very Short Play Festival winner.

  • 2012 – Beauty through my eyes contest winner.

  • 2013 – Very Short Play Festival winner.

  • 2014 – Winter Words Literary contest.

  • 2014 – Sommer Sonnets contest winner.

  • 2015 – Poem published internationally in Firewords Quarterly. Poem published in NEAT.

  • 2016 – Short story published in Flash Fiction magazine. Poem published in Bare Hands Poetry.

  • 2017 - Poem(s) selected for publication in Feminine Collective and FishFood Magazine.

  • 2021 - New piece selected for publication in Feminine Collective.
